The immunosuppressive effect of corticosteroids has become generally recognized, and its impact on the immune system mechanisms remains poorly understood. However, several studies have reported the association between cortisone levels and cytokine production. The authors examined the content of cortisone in human umbilical cord blood in this study. Umbilical cord blood samples taken from normal pregnant vaginal delivery of healthy infants and blood samples taken from healthy adult blood donors were analyzed.
