After the British, American and French research groups independently made breakthroughs, plasma-based plasma-based demonstrations of plasma-based plasma accelerators with accelerating gradients thousands of times faster than those produced by conventional accelerators were demonstrated. However, it is possible to accelerate the particles only at a distance of about 1 cm, resulting in a poorer beam quality and larger energy dispersion. Three physical research groups have developed a variety of techniques, including the formation of channels and bubbles in the plasma to produce only a few percent of the beam energy dispersion.
