Lovely animals are always kept as pets, especially those which look pretty and there’s always a lot of fun keeping them. Here’s a story about it.
The children begged for a hamster (an animal like a large rat),and after a long usual fervent promises that they alone would care for it,they got one.Of course, they treasured this special friend. They named it Danny, made “a house” for it,and played happily with it,as is often the case. Two months later, when Mom found herself in charge of cleaning and feeding the hamster, she decided to send it away and found a future new home for it.The children took the news of Danny’s immediate departure quite well, though one of them remarked,“He’s been around here a long time. We’ll miss him.”
“Yes,” Mom replied.“But he’s too much work for one person, and since I’m that person,I say he goes.”
Another child offered,“Well, maybe if he wouldn’t eat so much and wouldn’t be so messy (disorderly),we would keep him.”
But Mom was firm.“It’s time to take Danny to his new home now,” she insisted.“Go and get his cage.”With one voice and in tearful anger the children shouted,“Danny? We thought you said Daddy!”

While the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) prepares to finish building the space station,a small team of architects and engineers here at the Johnson Space Center is exploring designs for living and working quarters on the moon and beyond.
“Over the next five years or so,we will be using very lowtech things to identify future needs,” says Larry Toups, who heads the effort at the space center’s Advanced Projects Office. These needs are as important as radiation shielding and dust control, and as common as whether to include exercise equipment.
When the center’s health experts found out that Mr.Toups’s team was building mockups(居留地实体模型),they brought over exercise equipment. After all,the space station has this kind of equipment to help astronauts reduce the effects of weightlessness.
“We are using the mockups for dimensional studies,” Toups says as he points to four variations on crew quarters—ranging from 221 cubic feet to 418 cubic feet in volume. Here the crew would live upstairs. The kitchen, the common area, life support equipment and an airlock large enough for four spacesuited astronauts occupy the ground floor.
One concern,Mr.Rains,an expert at the NASA,points out,is moon dust.On the earth, dust particles’s naturally sharp edges are rounded by the wind and water. On the moon, the dust is more destructive.“It’s like finely ground glass.” he says. Thus,it’s important to keep the dust outside.
Other key concerns are shielding the crew from radiation, dealing with vertical transportation and so on.
In the end, however, the habitants also will need something: the feeling of home. That’s a challenge to any space architect.
60.According to the text, employees at the Johnson Space Centre are working on______.
A.designing new forms of space transportation
B.designing space station
C.designing homes for people who will live on the moon
D.designing homes for people who will live and work on the moon and other planets
61.From the text,we can learn that space stations need exercise equipment for astronauts because_______.
A.NASA wants to check the effects doing exercise in space
B.weightlessness can cause health problems
C.life would be uninteresting without it
D.NASA wants to know whether people living on the moon will need it
62.The text suggests that moon dust is a problem because_________.
A.it is glassB.it is sticky
C.it has not been rounded into shapes with soft edges
D.it can destroy the space station
63.How does the author feel about our ability to live on the moon?
A.It depends a lot on how people feel, not just technological capabilities.
B.It is exciting that people will live on the moon in the near future.
C.If we have the technology to do it,we should use it.
D.It is uncertain whether the center’s experts will solve all the problems.

It has been proved that a kid’s social development have a deep effect on his academic(学术的) progress.Children who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind academically as well and have a high chance of stopping attending school. In the early grades especially, experts say, children should be encouraged to work in groups rather than alone so that teachers can spot those who may be having problems making friends and then take measures accordingly.“When children work on a project”,says Education Professor Lillian Katz from University of Illinois,“they learn to work together,to disagree,to cooperate,to take turns and decrease tensions. These skills can’t be learned through lectures. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but don’t have any social skills.”
At certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation to others. For most children, school marks the first time that their goals are not set by a home clock but by the outside world.Just as the 1yearold struggle to walk, the 6yearold are struggling to meet their parents’ expectations.“Young kids don’t know how to tell effort and ability apart,” says Lynette Hills, researcher of early childhood education for the state of New Jersey.“If they try hard to do something and fail, they may conclude that they will never be able to finish a particular task. The effects of obvious methods comparison such as posting grades can be serious”,says Hills.A child who has had his confidence really damaged needs a rescue operation.
72.The writer seems to think a kid’s poor relationship with his classmates would_______.
A.have a lot of side effects on his study
B.develop his independence but limits his brain
C.certainly lead to his stopping attending school
D.have nothing to do with his progress in a course
73.The underlined word “spot” means_________.
A.teach B.help C.treatD.find
74.For most children, school makes them understand________.
A.that social needs and their own needs have nothing in common
B.how they can meet social needs
C.that one’s effort and ability can be two quite different matters
D.that it is society not they themselves that decides their future
75.Which of the following does a student most need according to the passage?

B.Academic success and independent thought.
