In the plastics industry, the term “composite” generally refers to a molded material composed of plastic resin or various resins and other ingredients. These other components are often incorporated with resins in order to produce electrically conductive molding materials. This compound usually also improves the thermal conductivity. Most plastics, including thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins, are inherently good electrically insulating materials. Such as thermosetting phenolic resin (Bakelite or phenolic plastic) is an example. These materials, developed in the early 1900’s and quickly and widely identified as electrically insulating materials for circuit breakers and circuit switches, are still in use today.
