词汇是语言学习的特定目标之一(Nation 2001:1)。有研究证实,词汇量大小与多个语言技能相关。词汇量测试结果对阅读理解、写作或写作评价、总体语言水平技能甚至学术成就都具有高度的预测作用(Laufer 1997)。词汇量测试的焦点是词汇知识在量维度上的表现。根据词汇在进行语言输入或输出时的作用,可划分为接受性(receptive)和产出性(productive)两类词汇量。本文介绍世界上广泛使用的三个测量接受性词汇量的工具,包括词汇量水平测试(Vocabulary Levels Test,VLT,Nation 1990:264-272;Schmitt et al.2001)、词汇量测试(Vocabulary Size Test,VST,Nation&Belgar 2007)和Eurocentres Vocabulary Size Test(EVST)(Meara&Jones 1990)及后续版本。最后提出有必要开发中国本土化的英语词汇量测试工具。
Vocabulary is one of the specific goals of language learning (Nation 2001: 1). Studies have shown that vocabulary size is related to multiple language skills. Vocabulary test results are highly predictive of reading comprehension, writing or writing assessment, general language proficiency and even academic achievement (Laufer 1997). The focus of vocabulary testing is the performance of vocabulary knowledge in quantitative dimensions. Vocabulary can be divided into two categories, receptive and productive, based on the role of the vocabulary when it comes to language input or output. This article describes three widely accepted tools for measuring receptive vocabulary in the world, including the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT, Nation 1990: 264-272; Schmitt et al. 2001), the Vocabulary Size Test , VST, Nation & Belgar 2007) and Eurocentres Vocabulary Size Test (EVST) (Meara & Jones 1990) and later. Finally, it is proposed that it is necessary to develop a Chinese-based English vocabulary test tool.
