The General Electric Company (GM) Department of Electrical Engineers (EMD) and the Federal Republic of Germany Siemens Electric Company are jointly developing and producing a three-phase AC (or AC-DC) diesel locomotive under a long-term contract. The first two locomotives are scheduled to be delivered to the U.S. Amtrak Railway in May 1989. Siemens is responsible for supplying AC drive train components and inverters for passenger car circuits. The locomotive’s powerplant is a 2240kW EMD 12-cylinder diesel engine, which is connected directly to the AC synchronous main generator. The AC power from the main generator is fed into two traction inverters through the rectifier. Traction inverter is in accordance with the principle of pulse width modulation work
