The western world misunderstood the Chinese sense of humor. Lin Yutang pointed out in his book “My Country and My People” that the lack of understanding on the Chinese issue between Europeans and Americans can be described as an unpredictable abyss. They sometimes ask: Can China have a sense of humor? Such questions as inquiring whether there is sand in the Sahara desert are sufficient to show its ignorance. In fact, “everyone in China has his own humor because they often like to tell jokes.” 1 Jokes are the embodiment of the Chinese sense of humor. If we translate the Chinese joke into the world, It can prove to the world that Chinese people do not lack sense of humor so as to eliminate the prejudices Westerners face toward China. The famous British sinologist Herbert A. Giles is an early pioneer in the translation of Chinese jokes.
