For more than 200 years, the cities of the Pearl River system have been affected by many factors such as politics, economy and military affairs, and have greatly changed in the number of cities and the size of cities. The increasing number of cities and the expansion of urban population are the characterizations of the urban civilization and progress of the Pearl River system in the Qing Dynasty. However, as a whole, the distribution and development of the number and scale of cities in the Pearl River in different sections are extremely uneven. First, The distribution of the upper and lower reaches is unbalanced. The other is the unbalanced distribution of the east, middle and west of the Pearl River system. No matter the number of cities or the size of the cities, the east and the middle are higher than the west while the middle and lower reaches are higher than the upper reaches. In addition, compared with the Yellow River and the Yangtze River water system, the number of cities in the Pearl River is quite small, but the scale is generally small, lacking large and medium-sized cities, and weakening the driving force of the region.
