The study of substances that promote the formation of new blood vessels has been completed after ten years of scientific exploration. In the three published articles, Bert Vallee and his colleagues reported on the purification of the protein they called angiogenin and the cloning of the protein gene. This exploration was based on the work pioneered by Judah Folkman. Folkman once pointed out that the growth of tumors requires nutrition, and nutrition is supplied by blood vessels continuously growing in the body. He also pointed out that a diffusible substance can cause blood vessel formation. Folkman called this substance TAF-tumour angiogenesis factor.
