In a retrospective study, the authors compared descriptors of computer-generated EEG spectra to those of neurologists who interpreted the original EEG. Information was collected from ongoing carotid endarterectomy and in patients anesthetized with isoflurane using nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and oxygen (O 2). Electroencephalographs were recorded on tape before and after carotid artery occlusion, and these tapes were then computerized off-line to give an average of 18 descriptors of spectrum. Neuropathologists analyzed a long list of original EEG waveforms recorded before and after carotid artery occlusion. Based on the severity of brain wave changes, they identified a group of occlusion EEG changes among the four observation groups. A descriptive examination of the distribution of spectral descriptors shows that a single descriptor can not fully reflect neuropathy
