在中国人的日常口语中,“三长两短”属于委婉语,人们忌讳直接说死亡,而是委婉地用“三长两短”来代替。“三长两短”同时还指意外的灾祸或者事故。这个成语为什么具备这样的含义呢?相信很多人都不清楚。原来,在古代,“三长两短”竟然指棺材的捆缚方法!在《礼记·檀弓上》对棺材的形制有这样的规定:“棺束,缩二,衡三;衽,每束一。”
In the daily conversation of the Chinese people, “three long and two short” are euphemisms, and people just talk about death instead of being taboo, but instead use “three strengths and two shorts” instead. “Three long and two short” also refers to unexpected calamities or accidents. Why does this idiom have such a meaning? I believe many people are not clear. It turned out that in ancient times, “Three long and two short ” actually refers to the method of binding the coffin! In the “Book of Rites Tan Gong” on the shape of the coffin has such a requirement: “coffin bundle, shrink two, balance three; Bunch one. ”
