China's Private Capital Was to Be Inverted in American Publishing Market

  A newly built publishing enterprise from China is located in Manhattan, New York ---- China Times Publishing & Media Company (CN TIMES INC). China Times Publishing media company is the subsidiary of Beijing Times the Chinese Book Co., Ltd. (it’s referred as China Times hereafter) At present, the China Times signed an agreements on the copyright transfer 100 types of publications with 17 well-known publishing groups and presses domestically. It’s not only the largest single output ever since, but also the first attempt of Chinese private enterprise in American publishing.
  China's First Private-owned Book Company Was Born in the United States
  By the end of June this year, the Press and Publication Administration had issued that private capital can be inverted in publication in the business activities of implementation of the law, and private capital can be used for "copyright transfer overseas". New China Times in America is an good example of hereby.
  However, it wasn’t impulsive for New Times, who released nearly 500 million and Zhu Kaiping, the chairman of Xinzhi, running a company in the United States. When he talked about his plan of founding a company in America, Zhu Kaiping delivered that he was lucky in a good time when overseas copyright transfer was supported powerfully by the government. What’s more, he was farsighted that he found a lot of oppornities the China overseas market was potential enough.
  In 2011, China published a total of 370,000 kinds of books, ranking first in the world. But frankly speaking, it’s embarrassing, because the Chinese books are hard to read in the market of Europe and America. For example, Mr. Zhu said that he only saw two Chinese books in the Chinese bookstore in United States. These two were translated by foreigners.
  However, this embarrased situation actually contains huge business opportunities, which is another reason that Zhu Kaiping chose to run his company in the USA. Westerners have a strong desire of understanding about Chinese status, culture, economy, politics etc, but they couldn’t find what they need. After a few visits, he found that the publication in America was not as difficult as in China, and Chinese packaging and planning wasn’t so bad. What made a difference was the language and culture between the two countries. He perceived that it can be avoided if done properly.
  But things didn’t go smoothly as expected. Because the way of getting things done was somewhat different from China, the company had gone through more than a year to be set up. Mr. Zhu has been through lots of difficulties. He decided to register from Washtington. Later, he found the humanistic environment was better in New York, which was one of the global culture centers with a lot of talents. Finally, he did it successfully in Manhattan, New York.   In July 2012, with a registered capital of 5 million Yuan, and at the No. 501 of the Fifth Avenue in America China Times has set up its office, which opened a new chapter of the Chinese prviate bookstore in America.
  100 Kinds of the English Versions of the Chinese Books Have Captured the Mainstream of American Public
  China's publication copyright transfer overseas has been put forward for many years, and there are many books in other languages, but a few English ones. Mr. Zhu analyzed the questionnaire on "overseas copyright transfer of books ’’ newly conducted by General Administration of Press and Publication, and found that English versions only amounts to 20% of the 100 books. He pointed out that if a only 500-1000 copies can be sold, English-speaking people won’t show their interests in it, because the market is very big enough to sell tens of thousands easily. However, if books in other languages aided by tens of thousands dollars, they will accept them, because it’s hard for them to make money to sell these books.
  Mr. Zhu knows that the English books are still the most popular in the west. It’s hard for the Chinese books to go into American market where English is the dominate language, but there is a huge market for Chinese culture. So, the desicion by the new company is for English books as well as the paper ones and e-books synchronous.
  The new company signed agreements on overseas copyright transfer of 100 types of books with 17 great domestic publishing groups, like Jiangsu Phoenix Publishing & Media Group. Due to the demand of "fitness", both sides would cooperate. On one hand, the domestic publishing groups have demand of overseas copyright transfer; on the other hand, Times publishing can also provide a platform for the international market.
  They bought Chinese books copyright, and then got them translated into English ones for sale. This mode was very common before, but generally, it has been done by foreign publishing companies. The translation only by Americans sometimes leads to some misunderstandings, and they may not reflect the Chinese culture well. For the new company, Mr. Zhu has a clear goal: With great products both in American and European markets, he should sustain the planning advantages of China Times that aims at the high-end readers from government, business community, and academic community in America.
  Because of the intelectual property of these three groups, they must have a global view, which is an important part that can’t be ignored by Chinese culture. Through these three, it also drives a lot of people in the United States to understand China. Mr. Zhu showed it to us by the following example. They introduced a Chinese policy, "How the Chinese Communist Party solves national problem," for Westerners, which can eliminate their misunderstanding of China for a long time, and still strengthen the communication between the two.   On the choice of books, Mr. Zhu also has a clear judgment that books may not be best-sellers, but the ones that contain culture and fully reflect the cultural heritage value of this book are O.K.
  Expansion Plans of Times Publishing in Europe and America
  In 2010, China Times began to realize the changes of product structure. It has changed from its single structure on politics into comprehensive ones within seven areas including social sciences, politics, literature, economy, life, children and reference. So it’s the most complete private enterprise. In 2010, the total growth reached 100%, and sales revenue growth rose by 70%. In 2011, China Times spent RMB 500 million Yuan with a tax paid of more than RMB 20 million Yuan.
  It’s not a small amount of money for China Times to run in the publishing market in America, because the total investment for its founding reached the U.S. $5 million. For marketing 100 kinds of the English version of Chinese books, budget of expenses was added up to U.S. $ 5.49 million. Mr. Zhu doesn’t feel unhappy for the total investment of more than U.S. $ 10 million in the new company. It’s a key strategy to expand in America. This was are just the first step to market these books here in the American.
  Mr. Zhu believes that without sales channels, overseas copyright transfer cannot be achieved. Chinese culture, in order to have impact in the United States, must enter the mainstream. Therefore, there are editing publishing, copyright transaction department, sales department and other departments in the new company.The editorial team is mainly composed of two parts. One is made up by employees who know China quite well. The other one is full of staff who don’t know China. On one hand, staff members who understand the Chinese culture and books will develop the Chinese culture; On the other hand, there are a number of people who do not understand Chinese culture, edit texts according to their own language. Translation team is also from two categories: domestic experts, and American experts. Finally, some American Sinologists from colleges compose of expert groups for examination and approval in the United States, as a result Chinese flavoris reserved, and then it caters for Americans.
  There were some obstacles on culture communication between China and America, but Mr. Zhu firmly held that the cohesion of the Chinese culture and the development of globalization are co-existing. With a atmosphere of a social exchange in English, like the USA, there was still a great market for Chinese culture.   As for the sales channels, Mr. Zhu took the scale effect. He believed that we couldn’t make money from a small number of books every time, but a large number of books would, so to this way attention would be paid. If they were on a certain scale, with the smooth channel, large publishing bookstores would focus on it, too.
  The first publication of the 100 kinds of books will be issued by the United States to Europe, and the United States book sales outlets, research institutions and universities, government departments, which offer paper books, e-books and service of reading online paid by fee. Mr. Zhu delivers that the feedback is good now. The best order is about 3000 copies, and the normal one is at least around 1000 copies. It has a bright prospect, due to the subscriptions from some large libraries and bookstores.
  The short term goal of Mr. Zhu is to establish a stable management team and sales channels, in about three years, and gradually win profit. And his further goal is to build China Times to be one of the best press concetrating on Chinese culture in Europe and the United States. "We try to build the largest base of Chinese and English books publishing.
  Whether or Not China's Publication Can Take Root in the United States
  There is a precedent that China Publishing operates in America. Like, in July 2008, the People's Health Publishing House invested USD 5 million to establish its subsidiary, USA .Ltd. In August in 2010, Zhejiang publishing joint group founded the Xinhua BoKu, an American co. LTD. However, people who run the Chinese books in America generally encountered difficulties.
  For the first time the Chinese publishing house was established in the United States. Some experts held that China's private-owned enterprise had gone into the U.S. market to change the market that it was only entered by state-owned enterprise. There is also a variety of the overseas copyright transfer and a good trend for the exchange of culture. Meanwhile, he showed his concern about its future. As we can see from the past, Chinese books were not very popular among American readers, although there is a bright future publication in the United States.
  Analysts said it is simple for book company to run book publishing and sales, with the shrinking of the global publishing industry, but it’s hard for the book companies that only focus on the publishing and sales of ordinary readings to sustain. He suggested that if Chinese present outputs its copyrights to be transferred overseas, it should form on entire publishing chain, which includes the content, channel, platform, development and so on.   China's overseas copyright transfer depends on better products that are created innovatively, which is based on the pragmatic spirit instead of the ambition. In Shen Wangshu’s view, it is definitely not a long-term policy if we only sell books and copyrights and even use our so-called classic to satisfy American readers. She shows that we should know the interests and demands of readers in Western countries.
  The experts pointed out that overseas copyrights transfer of China's publishing, especially for private companies that are lacking money, must have their own core products, while also taking into account the demand of American readers. At the same time, they should look for effective joint with press, and foreign mainstream channels to produce innovative books mainly about Chinese culture.
  China's Publication, a Case of Copyright Transfer Overseas in Recent Years
  In 2007, China Youth Press, a subsidiary company,owned by "China Youth Press International Limited", was registered in London. It is the first press of China, which focuses on English publications in UK.
  In July 2008, People's Health Publishing House invested U.S. $ 5 million to set up the People's Health Publishing LLC, followed by the acquisition of books assets of Canada, BC Decker Publishing Medical, which is the first time that China press annexed overseas ones.
  On August 1st, 2010, the China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation with Parkson Company in the United States opened its first overseas Xinhua Bookstore in New York. Xinhua Bookstore (North America) the online bookstore would be available in June 2010. It can supply nearly 20,000 kinds of books, including periodicals, audio and video products, and cultural goods.
  In November 2008, Huang Yongjun, the private bookseller registered New Classic Press in London, which was the first private-owned one overseas.
  In January 2011, the China’s first publishing enterprise, Shanghai Century Publishing Group and Singapore World Science and Technology Publishing Company jointly set up World Century and established SCPG of a wholly-owned publishing house.
  In July 2012, with a total of $ 5,000,000, Beijing Times Chinese Book Co., Ltd. was the first investor to set up wholly-owned publishing company in New York, which was the China Time Publishing & Media Company (CN TIMES INC). On August 29, in the 19th Beijing International Book Fair, China Times signed on agreements on copyright transfer of 100 types of publications with 17 well-known publishing groups and presses in domestic. It was the largest single order for the first time.
