  The production and use of efficient blended cements is state-of-the-art.Besides numerous technical advantages,these cements contribute to saving natural resources and energy as well as reducing CO2 emissions due to their reduced Portland cement clinker content.Clinker is mostly substituted by limestone, natural pozzolanas, fly ash and / or granulated blastfurnace slag.But the use of these supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) is limited ether by standards or, unfortunately, by regional and seasonal availabilities in other industries.To reduce the overall clinker content of cement further, and with substitutes independent of other industries, an innovative and currently the most promising SCM is calcined clay.Clays of suitable quality for the use in the cement industry are available in sufficient quantity almost worldwide and often nearby cement plants.Meeting the requirement of the European cement standard EN 197-1, pozzolanic reacting calcined clay is already allowed to substitute clinker in cement by up to 55 mass %.
