Soils and plants contamination of arsenic and heavy metals was investigated from the vicinity of the typical nonferrous mines and smelters in Changsha,Zhuzhou,Hengyang, and Chenzhou districts,Hunan province of China, and the data was analyzed through the principle component analysis, multivariate techniques and correlative analysis by SPSS 11.0 and Excel 2003.The results show that the abandoned soil is seriously by Cd,Pb,As,Cu,and Zn and heavily relative with the humans extensive activities of mining and associated smelting, and the mean concentrations of Cd,Pb,As,and Zn are far exceed the Ⅲ level of the national standards for soil environmental quality of China, the irrigated soils, especially the paddy soils are heavily polluted by Cd,and pose significantly characteristics of co-contamination,too.The content of Cd,Pb,As,Cu,Zn and Cr in vegetables, and of Cd,Pb and Zn in rice from the studied areas are far exceeded the threshold level of safety food of China,in particularly, the content of Cd,Pb,and As in vegetables and,Cd and Pb in rice is potential-heavily risk for humans health. The samples of wildings in the vicinity of mines and smelters are contaminated seriously, too. However, several special wildings, grow rapidly with big biomass, normal metals-accumulation with strong tolerance for Cd,Pb,and As,and are potential to apply in eco-remediation engineering for the metals-contaminated soils in future.
