Setophaeria turcica is a vital agricultural fungus pathogen which caused Northern leaf blight of corn and sorghum. The formae speciales of S.turcica have not been reported in China except Taiwan. At present, previous research on formae speciales of S.turcica had been only limited to pathogenicity tests. In the study, 188 strains were obtained from parts of China. There were no differences in morphology of 188 S.turcica strains derived from different hosts.Different formae speciales strains of S.turcica can be distinguished from each other with pathogenicity tests. The study showed that there were two formae speciales-S, turcica, f.sp.zeae but S.turcica.f.sp.sorghi, but no S.turcica.f.sp.complexa.Genetic diversity based on UP-PCR analysis among strains had led to the realization that the formae speciales of S.turcica represented obvious genetic differences. The study indicated that the pathogenic specialization had much closer connection with genetic diversity rather than morphology in S.turcica strains. Therefore, for the study of formae speciales in S.turcica, coupled with an integrated scheme of pathogenicity tests and UP-PCR analysis, it was evaluated for their ability to greatly abtain more comprehensive study of the pathology, population biology, the genetic diversity and race relationships of organism among these S.turcica strains.
