  Introduction Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer.Adenocarcinoma is the most common histologic type of lung cancer.Previously, few prognostic indicators are important to refine prognostic profiles of the patients with small lung adenocarcinoma.Some studies have undertaken to investigate the value of the ground-glass opacity (GGO) area found on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scanning as a prognostic indicator.But no dear consensus had been found.Methods The PubMed/MEDLINE and SpringerLink databases were searched for articles related to ground glass opacity on computed tomography in patients with small lung adenocarcinoma.Data were extracted and analyzed independently by two investigators.We extracted an estimate of the hazard ratio (HR) for comparing high GGO ratio with low GGO ratio.We combined the individual HRs into a pooled HR, and 95% confidence interval (CI)were calculated for every study.The publication heterogeneity was assessed graphically using performing Beggs funnel plot.Results Thirteen of 698 original studies with 2027 patients were included in our metaanalysis.Ten of those studies considered the GGO ratio in small lung adenocarcinoma as a prognostic indicator.The weighted HR of 13 studies was 0.85, with relative 95% CI ranging from 0.79 to 0.91 (P=0.001).Conclusions Our meta-analysis suggested that the GGO areas measured on HRCT had a prognostic value in small lung adenocarcinoma.The GGO ratio might have an independent prognostic significance of small lung adenocarcinoma.We obtained a good prognostic indicator for high GGO ratio compared with low GGO ratio.
