VP53B: a Potential Key Protein of WSSV that Infect Crayfish by Mouth

  Oral ingestion is the major route of infection for the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV).However,the mechanism by which virus particles in the digestive tract invade host cells is unknown.In the present study,VP53B,a structural protein of WSSV,Base on the amino acid similarity,we found that VP53B shows sequence homology to P74,the per os infectivity factor of insect DNA viruses.Therefore,the possibility of VP53B as a crucial envelope protein for WSSV Oral ingestion infection is very high.Neutralization experiments showed that WSSV treatment with anti-VP53B reduced the mortality of crayfish during the early stage of infection and greatly hindered WSSV proliferation in crayfish.These data indicate that the viral envelope protein VP53B is potential key protein for WSSV oral infection and provide new ideas for preventing WSSV infection.
