The currents characteristics around the submarine pipelines in the deep-marine continental slope canyon regions of the South China Sea(SCS)have been analyzed by using the sites observational currents data,which are observed at five mooring sites near the Dongsha Islands.The results show that the tidal currents are the dominant constituents in the entire study area,moreover the tidal currents are mostly of NW-SE rectilinear type in the canyon area.For the upstream and downstream slopes along the trend of the canyon area,the major tidal current pattern is irregular diurnal tide type,and the ellipticity of the current ellipse is clockwise rotation,as well as the residual current mainly flows to the southwest.Due to the topographic influence,for the interior regions of the deep-marine canyon area,the major tidal current pattern is irregular semi-diurnal tide,and the ellipticity of the current ellipse is anticlockwise rotation,as well as the residual current mainly flows to the southeast.
