Breast cancer is the commonest type of malignancy to affect women in western countries.In India, is the commonest cancer to affect women of metropolitan cities with over 80,000 new cases diagnosed each year, of which 35-40,000succumb to the disease.With existing knowledge it is not possible to prevent breast cancer, so the focus is on early detection.Currently new imaging modalities are being evaluated for their role in early detection of breast cancer.Many of these new techniques such as scinti-mammography, thermal imaging, elastography, molecular imaging are available in developed nations only.Modalities like MR mammography and fusion imaging are available in few centres in India; their cost is fairly high, making them inaccessible to most of the population.Even basic breast imaging modalities like film-screen mammography and ultrasound are not freely available in hospitals and diagnostic clinics in all the cities.
