Freed politically and economically,African Americans werestill enslaved culturally.Toni Morrisons first novel,The BluestEye,discloses black peoples distortion and alienation due to theirinternalization of the dominant ideology of the white culture andtheir construction of identity according to the white standards.Theblack cultural nationalism aroused black peoples pride in theircultural heritage.With the process of globalization of economyand the growing international mobility of population,issues ofmonoculture versus cultural diversity(cultural pluralism)havebegun to attract scholarsattention. This thesis is intended to provide a culture-basedinterpretation of the novel,The Bluest Eye,by analyzing thecauses of Pecola Breedloves misfortune and her counterpart,Claudia MacTeers survival.It aims to bring out the culturalsignificance of the novel:decolonization and demystification ofwhite cultural superiority,promotion of black pride and blackcultural nationalism in particular and cultural pluralism in general. This thesis is divided into four parts.The first part presentsan overview of black peoples position in the racial hierarchy andthe black cultural nationalist movement during the 1960s in theUnited States.The second part displays the cultural imperialisticenvironment:the omnipresence of the superiority of white culturein The Bluest Eye.The third part,the focus of this thesis,exploresthe negative impact of dominant ideology of the white on theblacks,the specific reasons for the psychological destruction ofPecola.The last part deals with Claudias resistance againstdominant norms and its profound significance.
