The fruit of the Cucurbitaceae Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim. was extracted with 30% ethanol three times at 90° C. for 2 h, and the solvent was removed in vacuo and dried to give a dark brown powder (TKE). TKE was dissolved in double distilled water and used for anti-ulcer experiments. In pylorus-ligated rats, TKE 500 and 1000 mg/kg significantly reduced gastric acid secretion and gastric acid concentrations in rats, and 100 mg/kg TKE increased these indicators. 100, 500, and 1 000 mg/kg TKE inhibited the pylorus-induced ulcers, and the inhibition rates were 44.4%, 68.2%, and 84.1%, respectively;
