Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) can successfully treat various components of the upper urinary tract stones. To assess the factors that affect patient exposure to X-rays in ESWL, the authors retrospectively studied 298 patients who underwent ESWL with a Dornier HM_3 lithotripsy machine from May 1984 to June 1985. The mean age was 48.2 years. The size of the stone was 19.3 mm. The patient’s fluoroscopy time was 160.6 seconds and 26 films were taken with an average body weight of 75 kg.
