二程专门解经之作不多,其经学研究成果主要收录在门人编纂的语录中。其解经重视文字的解读,并在此基础上进行义理阐发。二程运用思辨的方法解经,揭示经典中的思想与概念在理学上的价值,从而将仁义礼智等传统命题拓展到探讨理气心性的理学范畴,将儒家经典理学化。这些语录形式上质朴简约,迥异于长篇大论的汉唐注疏,适应了理学立足心灵感悟,直接阐发义理的学术思潮。以义理解经的思想有利于打破传统注疏的束缚,创发新义。但是,后世理学在继承这一解经方法的同时,大多不重视文字考证,出现穿凿附会的情况,为后世所诟病。
