<正>1.The Acquisition of the Tsinghua Bamboo Slips(TBS)The so-called Tsinghua Bamboo Slips(TBS)are a collection of writings on bamboo strips from the Warring States period,which were acquired in 2008 by Tsinghua University.Before the invention of paper,Chinese people used silk and bamboo slips or wood as writing materials,a habit that etymologically explains the current Chinese idiom shu yu zhubo(書于竹帛),‘written on bamboo or silk.’After the First Emperor of Qin(Qin Shihuang,秦始皇)had conquered the six independent kingdoms and had unified China,he proclaimed an edict banning the possession and circulation of most existing books,such as the Book of Songs,the Book of History,and treatises from the Hundred Schools of Thought,and he ordered them to be burned.The burning of many forbidden documents on silk and bamboo strips after the promulgation of the edict of Qin,constituted a severe loss to the Chinese cultural heritage.
