汉口江滩一带,原系英、俄、德、法、日等国的租界地。这里有以洋人名字而命名的街道,有银行、洋行、公司、工厂、码头,更有吃喝玩乐的波罗馆(俱乐部)、西餐厅、高级饭店、教堂,其间又穿插大小不等、长短不一的里份,建筑式样全是西欧古典风格,哥特式、拜占庭式、雅典式、意大利罗马式等等。尽管第一次世界大战后,我们陆续收回德、俄、英等国租界,并依次改称为“特一区”、“特二区”、“特三区”,但租界内兴建的豪华屋宇,显然超过华人的住处与房舍。华人对“特区”的“特”深感愤懑。
