Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean with a population of approximately 15.5 million. There are 11 public health midwives training centers, of which 8 are long-term and 3 are temporary. The National Academy of Health Sciences is the main training center and is responsible for coordinating training programs for public health midwives across the country. When planning to train such personnel, only the needs of maternal and child health care were taken into consideration. Later, the contents of primary health care were added to the training program. Today, therefore, these people are called “public health midwives”. The Sri Lankan government provides a public health midwife for every 3,000 people. Since 1980, a large number of people have received training. The training of public health midwives is divided into two phases, a total of 18 months.
