Objective: To investigate the relationship between atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), arginine vasopressin (AVP) and angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ) and traumatic brain edema after brain injury. Methods: The levels of ANP, AVP and AngⅡ in plasma were detected by radioimmunoassay in experimental rat brain injury model. The changes of brain water content were also observed. Results: Plasma ANP decreased 6 ~ 24 h after brain injury. 48h-72h significantly increased; AngⅡin 1 week after injury were significantly higher than the normal and (or) control group; AVP only 24h after injury was significantly higher than the normal and control group. Within 72 hours after injury, the brain water content increased significantly, but returned to normal after 1 week. Conclusion: The different changes of ANP, AVP and AngⅡ and the imbalance of function between them after brain injury may be related to the occurrence and development of cerebral edema.
