The Basis of Modern Art Until recently, the term “Modern” generally referred to as “contemporaneous.” Art was “modern” at the time of its creation. Cennino Cennini called Giotto “modern” in his 1437 The Book of the Art (see references). Giorgio Vasari of Italy in the 16th century described the art of his own time as “modern.” As a term of art history, “modern” refers to the time roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, which is customarily used to describe the artistic style and artistic concept of this period.
