现代语言学认为,人类的语言既是一个封闭系统(closed system)又是一个开放系统(open system)。其所以是封闭,是因为语言在形式上有一定的规律可循,具有相对的稳定性;其所以是开放,是因为语言在实际运用中又表现出一定程度的可变性或可塑性。而英语中的歧义(Ambiguity)则可谓开放系统中的突出范例。一般来讲,除了造句方法欠妥或说话人故意把话说得模棱两可外,英语的歧义是相对的。因为语境(包括语调、音调和停顿等)
Modern linguistics believes that the human language is both a closed system and an open system.
