In the 1880s, a large oil field was discovered in Lima, Peru. The crude oil it produces is called “acid oil” because of its high acid value. No one was able to find an effective way to refine it at the time, so it sold only 15 cents a barrel. But John Rockefeller, chairman of American Standard Oil, foresaw that one day he could find a way to refine the oil, convinced that its potential value was huge and insisted on buying the field. At that time, his suggestion was strongly opposed by the majority of the board of directors. In response, he said he would not risk taking his own money to buy the oilfield.
