Objective To study the changes of plasma nitric oxide (NO), endothelin-1 (ET-1) and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) in patients with severe burns. Methods Totally 84 patients with≥30% or ≥10% of total burn area (TBSA) were divided into hyperbaric oxygen group (HBO group) and non-HBO group (n = 10) Venous blood samples were taken at the same time, respectively, nitrate reductase method, radioimmunoassay determination of plasma NO, ET-1 content changes. Results The average plasma levels of ET-1 in non-HBO group were significantly higher than those in normal control group (P <0.01), while the content of NO was significantly lower in non-HBO group (P <0.01) Control group (P> 0.05), ET-1 was significantly lower than non-HBO group (P <0.01). Conclusion The decrease of NO and the increase of ET-1 in severe burn patients are involved in the whole process of post-burn organ changes. HBO can significantly change the content of plasma NO and ET-1 in patients with severe burn, so it is beneficial to burn treatment.
