茅盾是集社会活动家、学者、作家三重角色于一身的现代著名作家。作为社会活动家和学者的茅盾 ,其思维特点投射在他后起的作家身份的艺术思维里 ,导致他的艺术思维中先在地存在着社会思维和理论思维的有力渗透。这种复合思维在他短篇小说创作中表现为 :倾向于写重大题材 ,追求情节的深度广度 ,采用全知视角及由其转向人物有限视角的叙述方法。他的创作思维的异质性复合形成了“短篇不短”的悖逆型文体特点
