This article describes the relationship between changes in the rate of sexual chromatin bodies and X chromosome activity and cytoplasmic estrogen receptor proteins in breast cancer patients. The chromatin bodies represent an X chromosome in a pyknotic, inactive state. Initially, it was thought that the inactivation of the X chromosome was a fixed and invariable state, but it is now known that the appearance rate of the sex chromatin bodies is not constant, indicating that the inactivation state of the X chromosome is not permanent. Townsend et al. observed that the prevalence of oral mucosal chromatin bodies in humans during pregnancy was lower than that of non-pregnant women. It is speculated that estrogen levels may be the mediator of this change. Becret et al.
