France: “We don’t have a system for judging outstanding students.” The French high school system is different from ours. The junior high school and the high school (LYCEE) are completely separate. The Montesquieu High School I interviewed is located in the southwestern suburbs of Paris. It is neither a key secondary school nor a “problem school” where immigrants are concentrated. There are more than 360 students in the school, 40% from low-income families, and 60% from middle- and high-income families. Fatas has been in this school for more than 20 years
