Eugene O’Neill’s Puritanism is complex and changing. He has both the critique of Puritanism, but also agree. In his early dramas, Puritanism, as the alien force of mankind and natural humanity, confronted and clashed violently, criticizing the Puritanism’s erode and destruction of human nature and the repression and harm to human instinct desire. In his later dramas, with the development and change of his religious thought, he showed his approval of Puritanism. The protagonists in his works, as well as himself, have found spiritual endings and ways out of life in religious confession and forgiveness. Moreover, Puritanism also organically integrated into his tragedy, as an element of his tragedy art.
