摩擦焊工艺用于生产已有较长的历史,但多限于简单的钢棒对焊件。近年来,欧美把这项工艺运用到形状复杂的和多种相同材料及不同材料搭配的焊接工件上,其适焊的材料品种扩展到多种合金钢、铝、镁、铜、镍、钛、铌等,焊机实现了系列化、多样化和微机自动控制,应用范围也从机械设备制造行业推广到汽车车辆、航空航天、电器、石油化工等行业。摩擦焊具有的某些独到之处,是现有的其他工艺无法替代的。
