Peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) are constitutive cells of peritoneal tissue and play an important role in the development and progression of peritoneal fibrosis (PF). Injury and apoptosis of PMCs are one of the initiating factors that cause and promote PF hyperplasia. After injury, on the one hand, the structure of peritoneum is changed. At the same time, it secretes proteases, inflammatory cytokines and other pro-fibrotic factors, causing peritoneal interstitial cells Activation and matrix remodeling, which triggered the occurrence and development of PF. In addition, the role of PMCs in the process of PF is related to the above factors and the interaction between other cells (especially fibroblasts). In vitro studies showed that PMCs can be transformed into mesenchymal cells under the induction of tumor necrosis factor β1. However, the role and molecular mechanisms of PMCs in the process of PF remain to be further elucidated.
