What exactly does the skyscraper that we are proud of represent? It is entirely a product of the project’s suppression of architecture. The back of the stone that sticks to the steel frame hides the feudal fortress. The foreign powers are as strong as the economic system they rely on. Modern architecture has been questioned by architects. Just as novelists and painters accept the same questions from their peers, it is a natural thing that can be expected. Almost three quarters of century ago, when the land in China was still full of desolation, and few people knew what modern architecture was, the American architects had launched the above reproachful excuse for their ascendant urban architecture, and they were represented by skyscrapers. The modern architecture is still one of the most spectacular views of the United States ever known. Although, I believe without reservation that Mr. Wright’s words are not without touch to other architects, even if they have lost respect for the American master of architecture.
