符号学于19世纪末、20世纪初诞生,迄今为止已有一百多年的历史,然而与中国传统文化相比,它仍显得十分年轻.但是这并不影响两者之间进行深入的交流,因为早在符号学确立以前,中国文化的符号思想就已形成,其标志便是《周易》的诞生.《周易》是上古先民运用符号理解万事万物的经典著作,它本是卜筮之书,但随着易学的深入(尤其是《十翼》的产生),其占卜功能不断减弱,而哲学意义渐渐凸显.它在阴阳的基础上衍生出了名为“八卦”的基本图像,而每卦两两组合,便形成了所谓的六十四卦:爻画不断叠加,形成了象征天地万物的符号系统,人们在这一基础上理解世界的运行,参与事件的发生.由于这样的结构携带了一切结构所具有的特征——整体性、转换性、自我调节性,人们对《周易》的理解与运用自然可以不断地扩张、延伸.(祝东,2012)
