The American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the meeting reported a new study, the impact of genetic polymorphisms on drug metabolism, that could cause side effects in “poor” or “slow” metabolizers (PM). Prior to this report, RL Smith at the St. Mary’s Hospital Affiliated School of Medicine in London demonstrated that controlling the polymorphism of the cytochrome P-450 gene can control the hydroxylation of nearly 20 different drugs (Med Tribune 1984; February 15th). 20 drugs have hypoglycemic effects of phenformin, antidepressants nortriptyline and anti-hypertensive drug quizopuridine. nice
