Electrical stimulation of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) significantly inhibits the pain-induced discharge of the paraventricular nucleus (PF) neurons caused by peripheral noxious stimulation (75/93 units). This inhibition can be partially reversed (16/20 units) by injection of naloxone into the locus coeruleus (LC). This inhibition was also reversed (17/18 units) by LC injections of β-END antisera. Experiments show that LC is involved in the stimulation of ARC on PF unit pain-induced discharge inhibition, this participation may be through the ARC → LC β-END energy pathway, and then through the LC → PF norepinephrine effect on PF.
