To support the IAEA’s technical cooperation project in Zanzibar, the Chinese government recently donated a van. The vehicle will be used to transport the project’s staff and veterinary and entomologist research equipment. This project, carried out in cooperation with Tanzania and supported by IAEA, FAO and the United States, aims to eradicate the tsetse fly in Zanzibar through the use of radiation-based sterile insect technology (SIT). Tsetse flies are a form of lethal disease known as Ngana. SIT is a technology that controls insect populations. It uses gamma radiation to deprive male flies under laboratory conditions of fertility and then releases them to the affected area.
