Fluorescence emission lifetime of carminic acid was measured with a glycogen suspension in distilled water as a reference, τ = 0.093 ± 0.010 ns. The quenching of the fluorescence of carminic acid by OH- and I- was studied. The latter was in accordance with the Stern-Volmer equation with a quenching constant KQ = 1.27 ± 0.09 L · mol -1, the former did not obey this The simple fluorescence quenching of the equation may be due to the reduction of the lowest excited state energy due to the presence of a phenolic group in carminic acid.
