The Soviet Union is developing the Far East. The area is vast, sparsely populated but rich in resources. Until recently, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands were also places for foreign investors to “sigh.” However, Gorbachev’s reform “spring breeze” finally reached the area. Today, the Soviets are eager to open up this “restricted area” to foreign investors and are trying hard to increase their trade with Japan, China and South Korea. The goal of the Soviets is clear: to take advantage of the ever-evolving economic power in the Pacific to make the Soviet Union prosperous as soon as possible and to become a trading partner for its neighbors in Asia.
