Seven Diamonds
Leo Tolstoy
Long time ago, a drought assaulted the earth: All rivers and wells dried up, and grasses and trees withered, so many people and animals died of terribly thirsty.
One night, a little girl went out of home with a water pot to look for water for her sick mother. The little girl couldn’t find water anywhere and she was so tired that she fell asleep on the grassland. When she woke up, she found the water pot was filled with clear and fresh water. The little girl was beside herself with joy, so she wanted to have a good drink of the water. But when she thought that all the water was not enough for her mother, she ran home with the water pot held tightly in her arms. She was too hurried to notice that there was a dog in front of her, so she fell down on the dog and the water pot dropped on the ground, too. The little dog cried plaintively and the little girl hurried to pick up the water pot.
She thought all the water must be spilled out. But it didn’t. The pot was standing on the ground squarely with full water in it. The little girl poured some water in her palm to feed the little dog. The little dog licked all the water in her hand and became very happy. When the little girl picked up the pot again, the wood pot became a silver one. The little girl took the pot home and handed it over to her mother. But her mother gave back the pot to her, saying: “I am dying anyway, so I want to save the water for you.” Just in this flash, the silver water pot turned into gold. At this moment, the little girl couldn’t stand any more to drink the water. But just when she was about to drink the water, suddenly a passer came in to ask for some water. The little girl swallowed a mouthful of saliva and handed over the pot to the passer. At this moment, seven diamonds jumped out from the pot, and then a huge, clear and fresh stream came out of the pot.
The seven diamonds kept rising in the sky, and they became seven stars finally.
