Objective: To investigate the value of blood cells in the screening of pregnant women with thalassemia. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 468 pregnant women who were hospitalized in our hospital from January to December in 2013 was performed to detect blood cells. According to the results, 16 cases of thalassemia, 84 cases of non-thalassemia and control group 368 cases, comparing three groups of erythrocyte parameters. Results: The levels of hemoglobin (HGB) and erythrocyte count (RBC) in thalassemia group were significantly higher than those in non - thalassemia group (P <0.05). The average volume of red blood cells (MCV) and mean hemoglobin (MCH) <0.05). The level of RBC in thalassemia group was significantly higher than that in control group (P <0.05), and the levels of HGB, MCV and MCH were significantly lower than those in control group (P <0.05). Conclusion: There are characteristic changes of elevated RBCs and decreased MCV and MCH in pregnant women with thalassemia, which are helpful for the screening of pregnant women and are economical and practical.
