As a prestigious educational theorist and practitioner, John I. Goodlet worked hard throughout his life, and many of his books and studies were related to the idea of “hierarchical system.” The “non-graded primary school” is considered as the foundation of his thought. Based on an in-depth philosophical reflection on school education, a close examination of children’s and teachers’ psychology and a wealth of empirical studies, the book has conducted a thorough analysis and a profound critique of the classification system. Goodlad argues that the rigid hierarchies and stereotyped grade expectations ignore differences in children’s personalities and experience reserves, seriously hindering the sustainable development of children. He and Robert H. Anderson, the co-author of the book, put forward the idea of not grading primary schools in order to put into practice the theory of “respect for differences” and “sustainable development of children”, that is, all the elements of school education, Children should respect the personality traits and the requirements of sustainable development, rather than grade-based standards.
