The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society(SSCS) is an international nonprofit, marine wildlife conservation organization, which began in US. and Canada in the late 1970s. It protects whales, seals, dolphins, sharks and other sea life from being hunted and killed illegally. Unlike other environment protection groups, the SSCS acts directly to force illegally fishing to stop.
The SSCS follows large illegal whaling boats to the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean to protect endangered whales. Recently, the SSCS has been working hard to stop huge Japanese boats from killing whales. However, the Japanese government supports this killing, calling it “research”.
The sea shepherd uses “direct” action. They chase boats, cut the nets from fishing boats, and sink or damage whaling boats when they are not at sea.
Even though the sea shepherd takes risks, they are not afraid of governments that allow illegal killing. They believe other environmental protection groups are not brave enough to challenge governments. In the face of difficulty, they have achieved success. They have been on TV, they get support from famous people and they show the condition of endangered whales to the world.
However, some environmental groups disagree with sea shepherd?蒺s ways of protecting animals. They believe SSCS creates even more problems. In fact, many of sea shepherd?蒺s volunteers have been put in jail. Even so, Captain Paul Shepherd has won international awards for his achievements, especially in stopping the Japanese fishermen.
