柳诒徵先生精研史学,当年与陈垣先生齐名,一时有北陈南柳之称。一九三二年胡适在《清华学报》评论先生名著《中国文化史》,以为是文化史开山之作,但又认为对书法的介绍太多。其实胡氏忽略了书法是能代表中国文化的特有艺术,柳诒徵先生在文化史中作重点介绍,正是出于他发扬爱护中国文化的热忱。先生自己也终身致力于书法,当时书名并不在他史学声名之下的。现代书法的演变,其中首先是书写工具的改变。自西风东渐,硬笔逐渐替代了毛笔的实用功能,导致毛笔书写有与文化深度远离的趋势,而且使用毛笔
