There are some difficulties with implementing a resistance training program for people with type 2 diabetes, but with the right design, these clients can benefit from an enhanced physical fitness. Resistance training programs should improve each client’s strength and personalization to improve and control blood sugar and reduce weight. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) has steadily increased over the past 15 years and has become one of the world’s most serious public health problems. The accompanying “Special Population” section covers disease pathophysiology and exercise-related risks and benefits, with particular emphasis on resistance training. Here, health professionals targeting T2DM clients will be given guidance on designing a safe and effective resistance training program that includes strength, amount of training, form, and recommendations for improvement.
